CAD Draftsperson

A CAD draftsperson uses Computer Assisted Design software to draw plans and make 3D computer models.

People with CAD skills are employed by:

  • Engineering consultancies 
  • Construction companies,
  • Government agencies and local authorities
  • Infrastructure and utility companies

Job opportunities are good, especially as Christchurch's buildings and infrastructure are rebuilt over the next five to ten years. Upcoming major road and rail projects will also increase demand for CAD drafters.

Pay rates depend on qualifications and experience:

  • $28-50,000 with less than five years' experience
  • $50-80,000 with more than five years' experience

Key tertiary qualifications include:

Some companies offer cadetships, where you can train on the job while completing a tertiary qualification.

Required and recommended school subjects:

  • Maths (required for engineering pathways)
  • Physics (required for  engineering pathways)
  • Design & Visual Communication Technology
  • English
  • Statistics & Modelling
